Fabric Flowers

As part of my quilt for the Brown Bag Quilt Contest, I am making fabric flowers. So, I thought I would tell you how to make them. They are very simple and can be used to decorate quilts, clothing, headbands, purses, anything that needs some sprucing up.

Supplies needed:
fabric strip cut 3" x width of fabric
needle and thread
scissors

Fold fabric in half, wrong sides together. Start at one end and do a running stitch down the width of the fabric on the open side.

When you get to the end, do not tie it off. Gently begin to pull the thread so that your fabric gathers. It will begin to curl, like the picture below.

The tighter you pull the thread, the smaller your flower will be. Using your needle and thread that are still attached to the flower, begin tacking the back of the flower so that each ruffle stays together in the shape of a flower. (I hope that makes sense to you). Here is my finished flower.

You can sew this to a cloth headband, attach a pin to the back to put on your shirt or purse, attach a barrette to the back for your little girl, or whatever you feel needs a new look. As mentioned before, I am going to use mine on the quilt I am making. It is going to be a wall hanging with about 5 of these flowers in a vase.
Hope you have fun making these flowers! They are VERY addictive!

Dresden Plate

I have been wanting to make a dresden plate for some time and I finally did it! I'm working on a rag quilt shaped like a flower with these same fabrics and these were the scraps. It is approximately 18 1/2" across. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but it will probably end up being a pillow. We'll see.

Brown Bag Quilt

I got my fabric from my partner in the Brown Bag Quilt Contest. I have actually had them for about a month, but due to my lack of motivation I have not taken a picture of them until today. So, here they are.

I have an idea of what I'm going to do with them, but I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm excited and scared about this at the same time. My idea has A LOT of applique, which I have done before, but not this much. I hope to work out the kinks and get started on it very soon!

Happy Quilting,

Aleisha

Photo of the Day

I mentioned in my last post that I wanted to get in the habit of taking more pictures for my blog. Well, here is the first one. I was playing around with my daughter's new camera while she was in karate lessons. I'm not sure what type of flower this is (I don't do flowers), but it is only about 1.5" across. To me, this picture makes it look larger than that.

On that note, because of my commitment to take more pictures, I am purchasing a new camera this week. It's a Nikon Coolpix S4000. I actually have a larger camera, but I want something small that I can carry around with me so when the mood strikes to take a picture I can.

I'm also going to try to get on a more regular schedule for posting. I'm working on the details now. As soon as they are ironed out, I would love to host my first giveaway! WooHoo!!!!!

Totally Random

Do you like candy corn? I love it! Here is a picture of a jar that my sister and I filled with candy corn. We are taking it to a local fall festival and have people guess how many pieces of candy are in it. What do you think? How many pieces of candy are in this jar?

The picture with the Diet Coke is so you have an idea of how large this jar really is.

I'm Still Here

I have been sooo busy the last couple of weeks. My sister and I decided to start a cupcake business. In the last 3 weeks we have made about 600 cupcakes. Plus, my husband and I have started going to cheer competitions and selling Phiten Necklaces and Powerband Bracelets. We have been gone the last 2 weekends doing this.

Needless to say, there has not been much time for sewing. Although I am working on a flower rag quilt. It is actually shaped like a flower. I have all the fabric cut out, except for the flannel. That will be done this week. I hope to be able to get it all put together this week as well. That's the beauty of having your sewing machine at work. (I own a tanning salon and embroidery business) When I'm not busy, I sew. Can life get any better???!!!

I wish I was more of a picture taker, for your sake. I love reading blogs that show pics along the way. I'm going to try to get myself in the habit of taking pictures while I sew so I can share them here. Until then, thanks for your patience.
